Bills Reveal Key Training Camp Decision on Josh Allen’s Backup

While Josh Allen’s role as the Buffalo Bills’ franchise quarterback remains unquestioned, the team isn’t ready to automatically hand the backup job to the most experienced player on the depth chart.

Veteran quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, a former Pro Bowler and ex-Chicago Bears starter, will be competing for the No. 2 spot behind Allen at training camp. His competition? Mike White, who has shown flashes of promise in his limited opportunities as a starter.

Despite Trubisky’s experience and solid 2024 showing—completing over 73% of his passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions—the Bills aren’t guaranteeing him anything. General Manager Brandon Beane recently emphasized that every player, aside from Allen, will need to earn their spot.

“We don’t lock a lot of spots in here. Obviously, we know No. 17 is locked in,” Beane said. “But every year, you pretty much have to come in and earn your job. Mitch knows that. He doesn’t expect any different.”

White brings less experience but has started seven games in his career, completing 61% of his passes with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Though Trubisky may appear to have the edge on paper, Buffalo is making it clear that both quarterbacks are starting on equal footing heading into camp.

So while fans might assume Trubisky is Allen’s clear backup, the Bills are sending a different message: the job is up for grabs.
