Coach Mark Pope and his staff are working overtime at the moment. While putting the finishing touches on Kentucky Basketball’s roster for the upcoming season, the Wildcats are also beginning to build momentum for future recruiting classes.
On Tuesday, Eric Bossi of 247Sports reported that Pope and Kentucky will host 5-star prospect Lewis Uvwo for an official visit to Lexington during the weekend of September 11. The highly regarded big man is ranked No. 7 overall and the No. 1 center in the 2027 recruiting class by 247Sports.
Uvwo, who plays at Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is already being viewed as one of the most exciting defensive prospects in high school basketball. At 6-foot-10 and 225 pounds, he possesses an impressive physical frame, but his remarkable 7-foot-6 wingspan is what has scouts particularly excited about his long-term potential.
The elite big man is widely regarded as the top shot-blocker in high school basketball, and it reportedly is not particularly close.
“We’ve all heard the old adage that you can’t teach shot-blocking,” and Uvwo appears to be a player who may need very little help in that department.
Kentucky will not be the only program getting an opportunity to impress the talented center this fall. Uvwo is also scheduled to take visits to Baylor, California, and Providence before the end of September.
The constantly changing landscape of college athletics and the transfer portal has created more uncertainty around the recruitment of many top high school prospects. Still, it is undoubtedly encouraging for Big Blue Nation to see Pope and his staff getting an opportunity to host another elite talent.
There could also be a clear path to meaningful playing time by the time Uvwo reaches college. Malachi Moreno could potentially be entering his final season of college basketball, which may create an opening for a player like Uvwo to immediately step into an important role.
There is still a long way to go in this recruitment, but Kentucky’s upcoming official visit gives fans plenty of reason to start paying closer attention to Uvwo. Big Blue Nation would undoubtedly be thrilled to see a 5-star, elite shot-blocking center eventually make his way to Lexington.
