PHILADELPHIA  The Phillies are continuing to strengthen their pitching depth, and their latest move has given fans another reason to believe the club is serious about making a deep postseason push.

Philadelphia signed veteran left-hander Nestor Cortes to a Major League contract on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, adding another experienced arm to the organization. The Phillies subsequently optioned Cortes to Single-A Clearwater, while right-hander Brian Keller was designated for assignment to create room on the 40-man roster.

Another Arm Added to the Mix

Cortes, a former All-Star, gives Philadelphia another potentially useful option for its pitching staff. MLB reports that the left-hander could eventually contribute either as a sixth starter or out of the bullpen, giving the Phillies flexibility as the season enters its critical stretch.

The move is particularly notable because Cortes is returning from surgery for a torn biceps tendon in his throwing arm. He is therefore expected to work his way back carefully rather than immediately stepping into a major-league role.

Cortes is not the only recent pitching addition. Philadelphia also signed Casey Lawrence to a minor-league contract on August 14 and previously added Lou Trivino III on August 7, according to the club’s transaction log.

That sequence of moves suggests the Phillies are determined to maintain as much pitching depth as possible.
