Kentucky Turns Up the Heat Two Rival Stars Emerging as Aggressive Targets

LEXINGTON, Ky.  Big Blue Nation has another reason to be watching the Kentucky basketball roster closely.

Kentucky head coach Mark Pope is aggressively exploring the final piece of his 2026–27 roster, with two players from rival programs emerging as major names in the conversation: Mark Mitchell of Missouri and Jaxon Kohler of Michigan State. Recent reports identify both as leading options for Kentucky’s final roster spot.

This MSU Star Wins Big if Jaxon Kohler Returns

Mitchell Remains a Major Prize

Mitchell has become one of the most intriguing possibilities for Kentucky. The versatile forward produced 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game at Missouri last season, giving him the scoring and all-around ability Kentucky could use.

There is, however, an important hurdle: Mitchell’s eligibility for another college season is tied to an ongoing legal case, with a ruling expected soon. Kentucky remains strongly interested while that situation develops.

Kohler Could Be the Alternative

Meanwhile, Michigan State forward Jaxon Kohler has also become a serious Kentucky target. The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds last season while shooting 38.9% from three-point range.

Kentucky recently completed a reported 2.5-hour Zoom meeting with Kohler, showing just how seriously Pope and his staff are considering him. Kohler is also being pursued by BYU and Louisville, making this an increasingly competitive recruitment.

Kentucky Ready to Make Its Move

For Kentucky fans, the message is clear: Pope does not appear willing to simply leave the final roster spot open.

Making Case for MSU's Jaxon Kohler as NBA Prospect

The Wildcats are weighing two high-level options with different strengths. Mitchell offers tremendous versatility and offensive production, while Kohler provides size, rebounding and floor-spacing ability.

Nothing should be labeled a done deal yet. But with Kentucky pushing aggressively and both rival players firmly in the conversation, Big Blue Nation could be approaching another major roster twist.
