Malachi Moreno Breaks Silence on Kentucky  Uncertainty Return After Weeks of NBA Speculation

LEXINGTON, Ky.   Kentucky center Malachi Moreno has spoken publicly for the first time since confirming his return to the Wildcats, saying the decision came after careful consideration of his long-term development and his desire to help Kentucky compete for championships in the 2026–27 season.

Moreno’s announcement ended weeks of speculation surrounding his future after he entered the NBA Draft process while maintaining his college eligibility. Following workouts and feedback from NBA teams, the 7-foot center elected to withdraw from the draft and return to Lexington for his sophomore campaign.

“I wanted to make the best decision for my future,” Moreno said. “The feedback I received was valuable, but I believe another season at Kentucky will help me grow as a player and as a leader.”

The decision was welcomed throughout the Kentucky program. Head coach Mark Pope regains one of the SEC’s top young frontcourt players after Moreno earned All-SEC Freshman Team honors during an impressive debut season. His combination of size, rebounding, shot-blocking, and improving offensive skill set is expected to make him a centerpiece of the Wildcats’ lineup.

Moreno averaged 7.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game while starting 30 contests as a freshman. His consistent play and rapid development established him as one of the conference’s most promising young centers.

Kentucky enters the new season with high expectations, and Moreno’s return provides valuable experience and stability in the frontcourt. Coaches believe his offseason work and another year in the program could elevate him into one of the nation’s top big men.
