Auburn Basketball Hires Brian Kloman as New GM to Strengthen Roster Strategy
Auburn basketball is making a strategic move to bolster its program with the addition of Brian Kloman as the team’s new general manager. Head coach Steven Pearl spoke to the media on Monday, outlining how Kloman’s experience will play a critical role in navigating today’s competitive college basketball landscape.
When asked why he brought Kloman on board, Pearl stressed the increasing importance of preparation and organization in the era of the transfer portal. “If you look at the landscape of college basketball, it’s just a really important piece,” Pearl told AL.com’s Peter Rauterkus. “One, getting prepared, getting organized, and being ready to attack the portal in a way that can put you in a position to have an advantage.”
Kloman brings a wealth of experience to Auburn, having spent several years as an assistant at Louisville under head coach Pat Kelsey. According to Auburn’s official website, Kloman and Kelsey have worked together for more than a decade, dating back to Kelsey’s coaching tenures at Winthrop and Charleston. At Louisville, Kloman served as Executive Director of Player Personnel and Strategic Initiatives, where he played a pivotal role in rebuilding the roster. His efforts helped the Cardinals secure consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances following several down years.
Pearl emphasized that Kloman’s track record of success made him an ideal fit for Auburn. “For them to completely revamp and flip that roster and go to back-to-back NCAA tournaments, and be in the top 3–5 in the ACC every year since they’ve been there, is substantial,” Pearl said. “He’s been with Coach Kelsey all the way from Winthrop to Charleston, now to Louisville. For a coach to continue to advance and rise, he obviously has to have a great staff. BK is one of the guys that was really instrumental in their success.”
The addition of Kloman signals Auburn’s intent to be aggressive in roster management, particularly as the transfer portal continues to reshape college basketball. With his extensive background in player personnel, strategic planning, and program rebuilding, Kloman is expected to help Auburn identify and attract top talent while streamlining internal operations.
Fans can expect to see immediate benefits from the hire, particularly in how the Tigers approach transfers and recruitments. Pearl’s vision is clear: with a knowledgeable GM like Kloman in place, Auburn is positioning itself for sustained success both in the SEC and on the national stage. If you want, I can also create an even more “feature-style” version with additional anecdotes about Kloman and historical context to make it read like a full-length sports magazine story—something that could run as 1,000+ words. That would really make it feel “bulky.”
