Marcell Ozuna Finds a New Home as Atlanta Braves Era Comes to an End
PITTSBURGH, Pa. Veteran designated hitter Marcell Ozuna has officially found a new home, signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates after spending six seasons with the Atlanta Braves. The move marks the end of a memorable chapter in Atlanta and gives Pittsburgh an experienced power bat as it looks to strengthen its lineup for the 2026 season.
Ozuna joins the Pirates on a one-year contract worth $12 million, with a mutual option for the 2027 season. The agreement follows months of speculation regarding his future after he entered free agency at the conclusion of his time with the Braves.
The 35-year-old slugger leaves Atlanta having established himself as one of the club’s most productive offensive players during his tenure. After signing with the Braves before the 2020 season, Ozuna helped anchor the middle of the lineup and enjoyed several standout campaigns, including a National League-leading performance in home runs and RBIs during the shortened 2020 season.
Although his production dipped in 2025, Ozuna still demonstrated his ability to provide power from the designated hitter spot. He finished his final Braves season with 21 home runs and 68 RBIs, giving Pittsburgh confidence that he can add much-needed offense to its lineup.
The Pirates have been seeking a proven middle-of-the-order hitter to complement their young core, and Ozuna’s arrival is expected to address one of the club’s biggest needs. Pittsburgh ranked near the bottom of Major League Baseball in home runs during the previous season, making the addition of a three-time All-Star an important offseason move.
For the Braves, Ozuna’s departure creates an opportunity to reshape the designated hitter position while continuing to build around stars such as Ronald Acuña Jr., Austin Riley, Matt Olson, and Michael Harris II. The organization now has greater flexibility as it looks toward the future.
Speaking after the signing, Ozuna expressed excitement about the next chapter of his career and the opportunity to help Pittsburgh compete.
“I’m grateful for everything I experienced in Atlanta. Now I’m excited for a fresh start and look forward to helping the Pirates win games.”
Pirates management believes Ozuna’s veteran leadership and proven run-producing ability will benefit a young roster aiming to take the next step in the National League. The club expects him to serve primarily as its everyday designated hitter while providing experience both on and off the field.
As spring preparations continue, Ozuna’s move stands out as one of the Pirates’ most significant offseason acquisitions. Braves fans will remember his contributions over six seasons, while Pittsburgh supporters will hope his power bat can help spark an improved offense and push the club into postseason contention.
