Nolan Arenado Drawing Interest from Potential AL Suitors Ahead of Deadline
Although trade rumors surrounding Nolan Arenado have quieted at times, they’ve never fully disappeared — and now, an American League contender may be preparing to pursue him again.
According to Marc Feinsand of MLB.com, the New York Yankees are once again eyeing the St. Louis Cardinals third baseman as the July 31 trade deadline approaches. Third base is reportedly a top priority for the Yankees, and Arenado may become a viable option if made available.
Feinsand also mentioned that the Detroit Tigers could be in the mix for a third baseman and might view Arenado as a potential fit.
However, Arenado’s full no-trade clause gives him the final say in any deal. While the Yankees reportedly showed interest in him over the winter, they didn’t appear to aggressively pursue a trade. Arenado previously declined to waive his clause for a different contending team.
A major factor in any potential trade will be the Cardinals’ performance leading up to the deadline. With a 47-41 record entering Thursday and a share of the NL’s second Wild Card spot, the team may not be inclined to move Arenado unless they falter significantly in July.
Now 34 years old, Arenado is no longer the same offensive force he once was, posting a .247 average with 10 home runs so far this season. While his defense remains solid, he’s still under contract for roughly $74 million over the next three years.
