Tigers Stars Falter on National Stage with Disappointing All-Star Game Performances

The Detroit Tigers entered the 2025 All-Star break as MLB’s top team, boasting the league’s best record and leading the way with six All-Star selections. However, what was supposed to be a celebratory showcase of their remarkable season so far quickly turned into a night to forget in Atlanta.

2025 MLB All-Star Game

Detroit’s lineup was well-represented: Gleyber Torres and Riley Greene led off the American League batting order, while Javier Báez was slotted in the lower half. Reigning Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal took the mound to start the game, and both Casey Mize and Zach McKinstry were added as reserves. Unfortunately, none of them rose to the occasion.

The Tigers’ All-Star contingent collectively flopped, turning in a series of poor performances in what’s usually a laid-back exhibition. In fact, McKinstry, who played sparingly, arguably had the best showing among the group — a telling sign of just how poorly the rest fared.

Expectations were high as Tigers fans tuned in, only to be let down almost immediately. Torres and Greene both struck out in the opening inning. Then came Skubal, who struggled mightily in his brief outing. The left-hander allowed three hits — including a two-run double by Arizona’s Ketel Marte — and left with a staggering 18.00 ERA after just one inning of work. He did register two strikeouts, though one came only after a successful challenge overturned a ball call.

At the plate, Torres, Greene, Báez, and McKinstry combined for an 0-for-8 showing, striking out three times and making little impact before being substituted out. While the AL offense overall had a rough night, Detroit’s players stood out for all the wrong reasons.

Tigers Stars All Have Rough Showing in All-Star Game Defeat in Atlanta

Things didn’t improve with Mize, who was tagged for a solo homer by Corbin Carroll and pulled after facing just three batters in the sixth.

To add insult to injury, history doesn’t bode well for teams with a heavy All-Star presence — the last such team to win it all was the 2021 Braves. For the Tigers and their fans, the All-Star Game was more than just an embarrassment — it might be a troubling sign of what’s to come in October.
