Tigers Signal Future with Aggressive Promotions of Top Three Prospects
The Detroit Tigers have taken a bold step toward their future, promoting three of their most promising prospects—Kevin McGonigle, Max Clark, and Josue Briceño—to Double-A Erie, home of the reigning two-time Eastern League champion SeaWolves.
Ranked first, second, and fourth among the organization’s top 30 prospects (per MLB Pipeline), the trio’s call-ups come on the heels of dominant performances at High-A West Michigan. Their promotions were made official following Sunday’s games, with all three players joining Erie ahead of a six-game road series against the Harrisburg Senators before the All-Star break.
“They don’t carry themselves like high school kids,” said West Michigan teammate Seth Stephenson. “They think and play like veterans. Their maturity and skill level are way beyond their age.”
Max Clark: Elite Discipline and On-Base Talent
At just 20 years old, Clark continues to shine as a top-tier center fielder. Selected third overall in the 2023 MLB Draft, he slashed .285/.430/.427 over 68 games, showing excellent plate discipline with 65 walks to just 56 strikeouts. He also tallied seven homers, 47 RBIs, and 12 steals, with an on-base percentage that eclipsed his slugging—rare for a player his age. Erie will be the next test as scouts await signs of growing power.

Kevin McGonigle: A Hitter’s Hitter
McGonigle, another 20-year-old standout, has put up monster numbers since returning from an ankle injury. Slashing .358 with a 1.068 OPS, he’s tallied 21 doubles and seven homers while walking more than striking out—an indication of advanced plate awareness. He’s known not only for his bat but also for his competitive edge, leadership qualities, and ability to play both shortstop and second base.
Josue Briceño: Power-Hitting Catcher on the Rise
Briceño, 21, has emerged as a dominant offensive force behind the plate. Leading the Midwest League with 15 home runs and 57 RBIs, he’s slugging .602 with a 1.024 OPS. His power was on full display during a three-homer game and a clutch grand slam. Coming off a Triple Crown-winning AFL performance, Briceño is being carefully managed after knee surgery but is viewed by many in the organization as nearly MLB-ready.
