DETROIT — Detroit Tigers utility player Matt Vierling is set to start a rehab assignment on Friday evening with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens, where he’ll serve as the team’s designated hitter.

He won’t be alone for long. Right-hander Reese Olson is expected to join him on Saturday, taking the mound as the starting pitcher for Toledo.

“Matty’s arm is feeling the best it has in a while,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch shared. “We’ll begin his rehab with DH appearances through the weekend, and hopefully ease him back into playing defense soon after.”

Vierling was placed on the injured list again on May 27 due to a right shoulder strain. This came shortly after he returned from a long layoff caused by a rotator cuff strain suffered back in February during spring training. In his brief return earlier this season, he went 2-for-11, starting twice in center field and once in left.

As for Olson, he’s been sidelined since May 19 with inflammation in his right ring finger. He received a cortisone shot 10 days ago to reduce the swelling. According to Hinch, Olson will likely need at least two rehab starts, meaning he won’t rejoin the Tigers before June 25.

“We need to build his stamina back up,” Hinch said. “This is a step in that direction.”

Less Positive News for Alex Cobb

Unfortunately, veteran pitcher Alex Cobb continues to face setbacks. Cobb, who has been dealing with persistent inflammation — now in his left hip after previous issues in the right — received another injection this week to manage the discomfort.

Cobb, signed last December on a one-year, $15 million deal to bolster Detroit’s rotation, has made three rehab outings, including one with Triple-A Toledo. While he remains on a rehab schedule, the latest injection will delay his next appearance for several days.
