DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Tigers infield prospect Bryce Rainer will miss the rest of the season after it was determined he needs shoulder surgery following an injury sustained earlier this week.
The 19-year-old dislocated his right shoulder while diving back to first base during a game with Class-A Lakeland in the Florida State League. After consultations with multiple medical professionals, surgery was deemed necessary. The Tigers say Rainer is expected to be fully recovered in time for 2026 spring training.
Before the injury, Rainer was batting .288 with five home runs, nine stolen bases, 20 walks, and 33 strikeouts over 35 games as Lakeland’s primary shortstop.
Drafted 11th overall by Detroit in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Harvard-Westlake High School in Los Angeles, Rainer entered the season ranked as the Tigers’ No. 3 prospect and No. 53 overall prospect according to MLB.com. He will turn 20 on July 3.
