Left-hander Tyler Alexander, once a familiar face on the Detroit Tigers’ mound, is back in the AL Central. After being DFA’d by the Milwaukee Brewers on June 1 and electing free agency, Alexander has found a new home with the division rival Chicago White Sox.

The White Sox inked the 29-year-old to a one-year, $760,000 deal over the weekend. Wasting no time, Alexander debuted for Chicago on Sunday, tossing 45 pitches across three innings in a 7-5 loss to the Kansas City Royals. He allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out two.

Former Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Tyler Alexander (70) follows through on a pitch during the fifth inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.

Alexander, a 2015 second-round pick, spent six seasons with the Tigers as both a starter and reliever. During his time in Detroit, he went 11-23 with a 4.38 ERA and 273 strikeouts in 341 1/3 innings. The Tigers designated him for assignment in November 2023 after an injury-plagued season.

He spent 2024 with the Rays before signing with the Brewers in February. His stint in Milwaukee was rough — 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA over 21 appearances (including 4 starts).

Now, Alexander gets a chance at a fresh start with one of baseball’s struggling teams. If he can hang on until mid-August, he may get the chance to face his former club when the White Sox take on the Tigers.
