Cowboys Trade Rumor for Bills RB James Cook Dismissed as ‘Absurd’ by Insider
The Dallas Cowboys are currently relying on a running back committee of Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders, and Jaydon Blue. Yet, trade speculation continues to swirl—most notably involving Buffalo Bills running back James Cook.
Cook is notably the only Bills player skipping OTAs, amid an ongoing contract dispute that began after the 2024 season. He’s seeking a lucrative extension that would place him among the NFL’s highest-paid backs—reportedly aiming for $15 million annually after back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and leading the league with 16 rushing touchdowns in 2024.
This holdout has sparked predictions of trouble in Buffalo. ESPN’s Adam Schefter described the situation as “gruesome,” noting Cook has distanced himself from the team and even put his house up for sale. Schefter speculated that training camp could be a make-or-break moment if a deal isn’t reached by then.
However, insider Mike Fisher believes Schefter’s take is exaggerated—though not nearly as far-fetched as a suggestion from Pro Football Network (PFN), which floated the idea of a trade sending Cook to Dallas. PFN claimed that Cook could thrive in the Cowboys’ offense and that Dallas has the cap space to offer him a long-term deal.
Fisher sharply disagreed: “PFN clearly doesn’t grasp the reality here. Dallas paying $15 million a year for a running back? That’s not happening. Suggesting otherwise is absurd.”
Moreover, Buffalo isn’t exactly in a position to part with Cook either. The team is in win-now mode, and backup options Ty Johnson and Ray Davis don’t offer the same impact.
In short, while the Cowboys could use a back like Cook, the odds of such a trade actually happening are remote. Both sides—Buffalo and Cook—ultimately still need each other.
