Cardinals All-Star Reliever Open to Contract Talks Amid Trade Speculation
St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley is reportedly open to discussing a contract extension despite ongoing trade rumors.
As the July 31 trade deadline approaches, speculation has surrounded several Cardinals players. But the team has remained competitive, sitting just five games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Given their strong play, the front office may be rethinking its trade strategy—especially when it comes to keeping a key piece like Helsley.
According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Derrick Goold, Helsley is willing to enter negotiations for a new deal. While no official talks are currently underway, Goold notes that as long as Helsley remains open to the idea, there’s a chance the team could engage. The All-Star reliever could command a contract similar to other top-tier closers, with a potential deal in the range of $16–20 million per year over four or five seasons.

Helsley is having another strong season in 2025, posting a 3.00 ERA, 1.429 WHIP, and recording 13 saves with 23 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched. He’s set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and if he hits the market, he’s expected to draw widespread interest.
With playoff hopes still alive in St. Louis, retaining Helsley instead of trading him for future assets may prove to be a pivotal decision for the front office. Letting him walk in free agency without compensation would be a tough blow, which is why extension talks could gain momentum in the coming weeks.
