JUST IN: Bills Announce Unhappy James Cook Replacement

Analyst Projects Bills to Target Replacement for James Cook in 2026 Draft

Tensions appear to be rising between the Buffalo Bills and their star running back James Cook, as contract negotiations stall heading into the final year of his deal. Despite leading the league in rushing touchdowns last season, Cook is reportedly seeking over $15 million annually — a figure the cap-strapped Bills are unlikely to meet.

With Cook skipping OTAs and uncertainty surrounding his future in Buffalo, speculation is growing that the team may be preparing to move on from the 25-year-old back. Though still young by most standards, 25 is often seen as the beginning of the decline phase for NFL running backs.

Pro Football Network analyst Ian Cummings believes Buffalo could wait until the 2026 NFL Draft to find Cook’s successor. He predicts the Bills may target Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner, noting: “If the Bills don’t re-sign James Cook and look to the 2026 RB class instead, Quintrevion Wisner could be a great fit. At 6’0”, 200 pounds, he stands out with his elusiveness, ability to navigate tight spaces, and strong balance after contact.”

Cook has been one of Buffalo’s most reliable offensive contributors in recent years, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards in consecutive seasons and emerging as a key playmaker alongside MVP quarterback Josh Allen. Still, given the short career span of most running backs and the financial realities of building a roster around a high-paid QB, the Bills may opt to seek a more affordable option in the near future.

Whether or not the relationship with Cook can be salvaged, all signs suggest the team is at least preparing for the possibility of moving in a new direction at running back.
