LBREAKING: Kentucky Shocks College Basketball as star Returns to the Wildcats another major piece for a roster already generating significant national attention.
The move comes just days after a Kentucky judge granted Mitchell a temporary restraining order that opened the door for him to pursue a fifth season of college basketball and enter the transfer portal. Mitchell wasted little time making his decision, ultimately choosing Kentucky for what is expected to be the final season of his college career.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-9 forward, arrives in Lexington after an impressive 2025–26 campaign at Missouri. He averaged 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game, while shooting approximately 55% from the field and nearly 39% from three-point range. His production earned him Second Team All-SEC recognition.
A Stunning Turn in Mitchell’s Story
Mitchell’s path back to college basketball was anything but ordinary.
After completing his Missouri career, Mitchell declared for the 2026 NBA Draft. He ultimately went undrafted but received an opportunity with the Denver Nuggets during NBA Summer League after signing an Exhibit 10 contract.
His college eligibility appeared to be finished until the legal challenge involving the NCAA changed everything.
A Kentucky court ruling granted Mitchell temporary relief, allowing him to pursue another collegiate season. The decision immediately created a new opportunity for Kentucky, which had maintained interest in the talented forward.
Within roughly a day of receiving the ruling, Mitchell committed to the Wildcats.
Mark Pope Gets Another Major Piece
For Mark Pope, the timing could hardly be better.
Kentucky had deliberately kept its final roster spot available while monitoring the situation surrounding Mitchell. Once the legal door opened, the Wildcats moved quickly and ultimately secured one of the most accomplished available players in the late offseason.
Mitchell now joins a Kentucky roster that already includes several highly regarded additions, including former Iowa State standout Milan Momcilovic. His arrival gives Pope another versatile forward capable of scoring, rebounding and creating opportunities for teammates.
The combination of Mitchell and Momcilovic could become one of the most intriguing forward pairings in college basketball.
A Player Kentucky Knows Very Well
There is another fascinating element to the story.
Mitchell has already caused problems for Kentucky on multiple occasions during his college career. He has scored at least 20 points in each of his three career meetings against the Wildcats, including a memorable performance during Missouri’s upset of Kentucky at Rupp Arena last season.
Now, instead of preparing to stop Mitchell, Kentucky fans will be watching him wear the blue and white.
That reversal could make Mitchell one of the most closely watched players in the SEC next season.
Kentucky’s Roster Gets Even Stronger
Mitchell’s commitment has immediately changed the perception of Kentucky’s 2026–27 roster.
The Wildcats already entered the offseason with significant expectations, but adding a proven SEC scorer this late gives Pope even more flexibility. Mitchell can contribute on both ends of the floor, attack mismatches and provide veteran leadership to a team with championship aspirations.
Several national outlets now view Kentucky as a potential top-10 team, while some analysts have gone even further in discussing the Wildcats as a legitimate Final Four contender.
The NCAA Situation Remains Important
While Mitchell’s commitment is official, the legal situation surrounding fifth-year eligibility is not necessarily finished.
The temporary restraining order currently allows Mitchell to pursue his additional season, but the NCAA continues to challenge similar eligibility rulings. That means the legal battle could continue into the coming weeks.

For now, however, Kentucky has secured Mitchell’s commitment and is preparing for the possibility of having him on the court.
Big Blue Nation Has Plenty to Celebrate
For Kentucky supporters, this is the kind of late offseason development that can completely change expectations.
A player who spent the previous two seasons wearing Missouri colors will now suit up for the Wildcats. Mitchell brings SEC experience, scoring ability, size and versatility to a Kentucky team that is already being discussed among the nation’s better teams.
And there is an intriguing storyline waiting in January.
Kentucky is scheduled to visit Missouri on January 9, meaning Mitchell could return to Mizzou Arena wearing Kentucky blue.
That game could become one of the most anticipated matchups of Kentucky’s regular season.
For Mark Pope and the Wildcats, the message is clear: Kentucky has added another proven star, and the 2026–27 season just became considerably more interesting.
Mark Mitchell is a Wildcat.
And Kentucky’s championship ambitions just received another major boost.
