James Cook Skips OTAs Amid Contract Negotiations With Bills

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is noticeably absent from the team’s voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) as he seeks a new contract ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

Entering the final year of his rookie deal—a four-year contract worth $5.83 million—Cook is aiming for a significant payday. According to Yahoo Sports, Bills head coach Sean McDermott confirmed that Cook was not present on the first day of OTAs, noting the absence is tied to Cook’s push for a contract extension.

Cook believes he’s among the NFL’s elite at his position and is likely eyeing a salary in the range of $12–15 million per year, comparable to top backs like Derrick Henry (Ravens) and Saquon Barkley (Eagles).

In 2024, Cook delivered a standout season, rushing for 1,009 yards and 16 touchdowns on 207 carries—averaging an impressive 4.9 yards per carry. He also contributed as a receiver with 32 catches for 258 yards and two touchdowns.

Still only 25 years old, Cook is an integral part of Buffalo’s offense. With OTAs running through early June and mandatory minicamp set for June 10–12, the Bills may look to resolve his contract situation soon to avoid any disruption heading into the regular season.
