Aaron Nola’s Ankle Setback Raises Concerns for Phillies
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola is facing another hurdle in his recovery from a right ankle sprain, as lingering soreness kept him from participating in a scheduled bullpen session, according to ESPN.
Nola was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 16 after injuring his ankle during agility drills in the outfield in Tampa. He acknowledged that the discomfort has led him to overcompensate physically, affecting other parts of his body.
“This is frustrating,” Nola said. “I’ve pitched through things before, and they haven’t really bothered me. I thought this would’ve cleared up by now, but it hasn’t. I obviously never want to go on the IL—I’m a competitor and I’m here to pitch.”
The Phillies are off to a strong start this season, but Nola’s absence could prove costly. Before landing on the IL, Nola struggled on the mound, most notably giving up 12 hits, nine runs, and three home runs in a rough outing against the Cardinals—career highs in all three categories. He currently holds a 1–7 record with a 6.16 ERA across nine starts in 2025. Over his 11-year career with Philadelphia, he’s compiled a 105–86 record with a 3.78 ERA.
To help fill the void, the Phillies called up right-hander Daniel Robert from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Robert was acquired from the Rangers in a trade on April 30.

In other injury news, infielder Edmundo Sosa was held out of the May 24 game against the Athletics due to left wrist soreness.
Despite the setbacks, the Phillies remain contenders in the NL East. A healthy and effective Nola would boost their chances significantly, but for now, they’ll have to continue without one of their top arms.
