Just In: Panthers Cut Ties With 2 Players To Battle Lions Over A Blockbuster Trade Deal.

Panthers, Lions Linked in Potential Amik Robertson Trade Deal

The Carolina Panthers may not be finished reshaping their secondary, with slot cornerback emerging as a key area of concern. NFL writer Anthony Rizzuti of PanthersWire suggests that Detroit Lions defensive back Amik Robertson could be a trade target to fill that gap. Despite re-signing Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, Carolina still lacks a dependable option at nickel, and Rizzuti identifies Robertson as a possible solution.

“Robertson could also appeal as an option at the nickel spot,” Rizzuti noted, pointing out that the veteran defender is entering the final year of his contract and could face competition from Lions’ 2024 second-round pick Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Robertson, who is expected to be healthy for the start of the season after a playoff injury, might become expendable as Detroit evaluates younger talent.

Detroit Lions Amik Robertson Leaves Commanders Game With Elbow Injury

After prioritizing offense last year to support quarterback Bryce Young, the Panthers used this offseason to strengthen their defense. New additions include Tre’von Moehrig in the secondary and pass rushers like Tershawn Wharton, Nic Scourton, and Pincely Umanmielen. But with no clear answer at slot corner, a trade for Robertson could complete the puzzle.

Robertson isn’t a star but is solid—he earned a respectable 64.7 Pro Football Focus grade in 2024, ranking 58th out of 116 qualifying cornerbacks. However, the bigger question is whether Detroit is willing to part with him.

Currently in a championship-contending phase, the Lions might be reluctant to let go of experienced depth in the secondary. While Rakestraw’s presence could theoretically make Robertson expendable, his disappointing rookie campaign—with a 42.8 PFF grade and minimal playing time—makes it risky for Detroit to rely on him.

Unless Carolina offers a trade package too good to pass up, Robertson is likely to remain in Detroit as they chase a Super Bowl in 2025.
