ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) The Los Angeles Angels announced Friday that Brady Anderson will serve as their hitting coach next season, with former Seattle Mariners first baseman John Mabry joining the staff as the assistant hitting coach.

The Angels confirmed Anderson’s hiring as he begins his first major league coaching role under new manager Kurt Suzuki. Anderson, a UC Irvine product, enjoyed a 15-year MLB career 14 of those seasons spent with the Baltimore Orioles. A three-time All-Star, he hit 210 home runs, including a career-best 50 in 1996, and drove in 761 runs. After retiring, he worked several years in the Orioles’ front office during the 2010s.

Anderson steps into a challenging situation: the Angels led MLB in strikeouts this past season, posted a league-worst .225 batting average, anddespite ranking fourth in home runsfinished just 25th in runs scored. The franchise is coming off a 72–90 season and has now endured 10 straight losing years and 11 consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, the longest active droughts in the majors.

Mabry joins the Angels after serving as a senior adviser with the Baltimore Orioles last season. He has previous coaching experience with the St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, and Miami Marlins. As a player, he spent 14 MLB seasons from 1994 to 2007, including three with the Mariners across two separate stints (1999–2000, 2003).

The Angels have also hired Mike Maddux as their new pitching coach. Unlike Suzuki and Anderson, Maddux brings extensive experiencehe enters his 24th straight season as a major league pitching coach.
