The Cardinals Are Back in the Mix So What Should They Do at the Trade Deadline?
By Curtbishop98 | May 16, 2025
After starting the season 14–19, the Cardinals have surged back into relevance with a nine-game winning streak and a comeback win to take a series from the Phillies. While it’s still too early to say if this turnaround is sustainable, the team has looked better than expected.
That raises the question: what does this resurgence mean for the trade deadline?
If they continue contending, the Cardinals will likely be buyers. But if they are, they need to avoid their usual deadline pattern—adding aging veterans on expiring deals who don’t significantly improve the team and block younger talent.
Instead, they should target younger, controllable players who can contribute now and in the future. Even buyer-to-buyer trades—like the 2022 Edmundo Sosa-for-JoJo Romero swap—could make sense.

Names like Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker, who have struggled this year, could be used in deals to acquire promising young arms. A team like the Dodgers, who may need help at third base or in the outfield, could be a trade partner, potentially offering someone like Bobby Miller or a bullpen arm in return.
If such future-focused deals aren’t available, the Cardinals may be better off standing pat rather than reverting to the old habit of picking up veterans with little upside.
