The Philadelphia Phillies are finally seeing the kind of impact they were hoping for from rookies Andrew Painter and Justin Crawford.
Although the team has mostly kept its core intact since its 2022 World Series run, this season introduced a few notable changes. While Adolis García has contributed positively, the real difference-makers so far have been Painter and Crawford, who bring a fresh dynamic compared to last year
According to MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki, the early signs from both rookies have been very promising. Even though the Phillies had a somewhat slow start overall, the two newcomers have already provided a boost. The team doesn’t need them to carry the load, but it’s encouraging that they’re capable of stepping up when needed.
Through the first week of the season—just six games—Crawford has started five and made an immediate impression. He’s batting .412, highlighted by a hit on the very first pitch he saw in the majors and a walk-off hit during the opening homestand. With a .915 OPS and better-than-expected defense in center field, he’s been exactly what the team hoped for in an everyday role.
Painter has also impressed in limited action. In his MLB debut against the Washington Nationals, he pitched 5.1 innings, struck out eight, and allowed just one run. His early numbers—a 1.69 ERA and 0.94 WHIP—offer reassurance for a rotation that entered the season with some uncertainty.
While it’s still very early, both rookies have delivered exactly what the Phillies needed, making their promotions look like smart decisions already.
