Jarrett Stidham receives support after stepping in for Bo Nix during AFC title game
Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II shared that Jarrett Stidham faced an incredibly difficult situation when he had to replace Bo Nix in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots.
Surtain explained that Stidham had little chance to truly prepare for such a high-pressure moment, especially after spending the season behind Nix. Being suddenly thrust into a fast-paced championship game made the challenge even tougher, and he emphasized that no amount of limited reps could have fully readied him for that situation.
He also described the emotional shift in the locker room following Denver’s overtime win against the Buffalo Bills in the Divisional Round. While the team initially celebrated the victory, the mood quickly turned somber after learning that Nix had suffered a broken ankle, ruling him out of the conference title game. Players felt deflated and deeply sympathetic toward their starting quarterback.
The injury raised longer-term concerns as well, given Nix’s history with ankle issues dating back to his college days with the Auburn Tigers. Although he’s expected to return by the start of the season, questions remain among fans about his durability and the team’s confidence in Stidham after the AFC title loss.
