The Detroit Tigers have added experienced right‑hander Geoff Hartlieb to their minor‑league system, signing him on July 14, 2025, after the veteran reliever was designated for assignment by the New York Yankees earlier this month,
Hartlieb had a tumultuous stint with the Yankees this season. He debuted on July 1, but struggled, surrendering six earned runs across just 1 ⅓ innings. That performance resulted in a steep 40.50 ERA and two separate DFA stints before he cleared waivers
Now part of the Tigers’ organization, Hartlieb has been assigned to Triple-A Toledo. He wasted no time making an appearance: pitching 1 ⅓ scoreless, no-hit innings in his debut with the Mud Hens The Tigers are hoping this bounce-back performance is the beginning of a turnaround.
What This Move Means
- Bullpen insurance: Detroit has endured heavy use of its relief corps recently. Hartlieb adds extra flexibility in the minors should reinforcements be needed.
- Upside potential: A clean outing in Toledo suggests Hartlieb might have the mechanical adjustments or confidence to re-enter major-league conversations.
- Under-the-radar target: While not a high-profile signing, Hartlieb presents a low‑risk, potential high‑reward option if the Tigers continue to struggle with bullpen depth.
