JUST IN : Rangers Target Blockbuster Trade for Star Winger to Supercharge Offense in 2025 Bounce-Back Bid

Rangers Eyeing $25M Scoring Winger in Potential Trade to Bolster Offense

Following a disappointing season in which they missed the playoffs, the New York Rangers are aiming to bounce back and become a playoff contender again. This offseason, the team has already made notable moves, including trading away veterans Chris Kreider and K’Andre Miller, while signing defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov.

Now, NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports that the Rangers are among the teams showing interest in Seattle Kraken winger Jared McCann, a proven offensive contributor.

McCann is under contract for two more years at $5 million annually, part of a five-year, $25 million deal. With a manageable cap hit, he’s considered an attractive trade target, particularly for teams looking to add scoring depth. McCann does hold a 10-team no-trade clause, giving him some control over where he might be dealt.

According to Pagnotta, the Rangers are joined by the Vancouver Canucks and Ottawa Senators as teams linked to McCann. If acquired, McCann would likely slide into New York’s second line on the left wing, pushing Will Cuylle to the third line.

McCann’s Production Could Fill a Major Need

In 2024-25, McCann played all 82 games and delivered consistent offense, tallying 22 goals and 39 assists for 61 points. While the Rangers’ exact offer remains unclear, his production suggests he could make an immediate impact in their top six.

Seattle Open to Moving Their Franchise Leader

Although McCann is one of the most productive players in Kraken history—with franchise-leading marks in goals (118) and points (243)—Seattle is reportedly open to trading him. NHL insider Jeff Marek shared on Sekers & Price that new Kraken GM Jason Botterill may be looking to reshape the roster and sees McCann as potentially expendable.

Given Seattle’s uncertain playoff prospects, the team might opt to trade McCann now in exchange for young talent and draft capital to help build for the future.

Rangers’ GM Reflects on Bold Offseason

General Manager Chris Drury acknowledged the tough decisions made this offseason, including parting ways with longtime Ranger Chris Kreider. Drury emphasized that salary cap considerations forced the team to make tough roster calls in order to improve overall balance.

“He’ll always be a Ranger,” Drury said of Kreider, noting the mutual effort in finding him a new fit.

Drury also praised Gavrikov’s addition on defense, highlighting his physical play, reach, and compatibility with potential partners like Adam Fox. The Rangers see Gavrikov as a core piece of their revamped blue line heading into next season.

With just over $777,000 in cap space remaining, the Rangers may need to get creative if they hope to land McCann—but if they do, it could provide the offensive boost they’ve been searching for.
