New Bills Addition Already at Risk of Being Cut Before Training Camp
Facing Long Odds
Constructing a championship-caliber NFL roster is no small feat for any general manager. While some seem to master it quickly, others struggle to even get the time to fully implement their vision. In the case of Brandon Beane, he’s done an impressive job over the years with the Buffalo Bills—creating not just a competitive team, but also fostering a strong organizational culture.
Still, no roster is ever truly perfect. Many fans often point to wide receiver as a weak spot, though Beane hasn’t shown much concern with that viewpoint. Another area that could use improvement is the safety position on defense.
The 2023 season marked a transition, as the Bills moved on from long-time stalwarts Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. In their absence, Buffalo rotated between Taylor Rapp, Damar Hamlin, and later Cole Bishop, who emerged late in the year. Cam Lewis also stepped in occasionally due to injuries.
Among the offseason acquisitions was safety Darrick Forrest, who seemed like a smart, low-risk addition at the time. But as training camp nears, there are questions about whether he’ll even survive final roster cuts—largely due to his lack of familiarity with the coaching staff.
Is Darrick Forrest Destined to Miss the Final Cut?
Forrest joined the Bills on a budget-friendly one-year contract, giving the team flexibility to move on from him if needed. Similarly, Damar Hamlin is also on a one-year deal, but unlike Forrest, Hamlin was drafted by the Bills and remains a fan favorite.

Buffalo also has Taylor Rapp, widely considered their top safety, and 2024 second-round pick Cole Bishop—both of whom are near-locks to make the team. This leaves Forrest and Hamlin possibly competing for the final safety spot.
