This offseason has brought at least one noticeable change for Buffalo Bills Pro Bowl running back James Cook—he unveiled a new nameplate reading “Cook III” during the team’s mandatory minicamp. He shared that the switch had been in the works for a while but only became official after completing the necessary league paperwork.

But that minor adjustment is far overshadowed by a much bigger goal for Cook: securing a substantial contract extension. Coming off a season in which he tied the franchise record with 16 rushing touchdowns and led the NFL in scores on the ground, Cook is aiming to land a deal that reflects his production.

Despite his standout performance, talks between Cook and the Bills on a contract extension have yet to produce an agreement as training camp nears.

Cook Seeks Big Payday After Career Year
Cook’s impact goes beyond touchdowns—he ranked fifth among all NFL backs with 3.1 yards before contact per rush and has racked up 2,638 rushing yards since entering the league in 2022, the most by any back from that draft class.

The 24-year-old is reportedly eyeing a deal worth around $15 million annually, which would put him just behind elite names like Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey, but in line with Derrick Henry. If no agreement is reached soon, Cook could report to camp but stage a “hold-in,” where he attends but doesn’t practice.

Still, Cook was a full participant during minicamp, saying, “Why not? I’m here, I’m part of the team. I’m a leader, so I just got to practice and get a jump.” His remarks suggest a willingness to stay involved, even amid uncertainty about his future deal.

Contract Talks Ongoing, Optimism Remains
Insiders suggest there’s still an open path for the Bills and Cook to find common ground before the regular season begins. Multiple outlets, including ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and Heavy.com, have reported on the ongoing discussions and the potential implications of a prolonged standoff.
