DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have bolstered their bullpen by claiming veteran right-handed pitcher Carlos Hernández off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies, the team confirmed on Monday.
Hernández, 28, is out of minor-league options, so he will immediately join Detroit’s active major league roster. The team will have to make a corresponding roster adjustment, potentially as early as Tuesday. One key factor could be the status of Will Vest, who left Sunday’s game in the eighth inning due to injury. If Vest lands on the injured list, Hernández would likely fill his roster spot. If not, the Tigers may send rookie right-hander Tyler Owens back to Triple-A Toledo. Owens was recently promoted to take the place of John Brebbia, who was designated for assignment.
Detroit has some familiarity with Hernández, who spent parts of five seasons with the Kansas City Royals and has faced the Tigers 15 times—more than against any other team except the Cleveland Guardians.

The Phillies designated Hernández for assignment on June 11. In 2025, he recorded a 1-0 record with a 5.26 ERA, walking 13 and striking out 23 over 25 2/3 innings. Known for his power arm, Hernández averages 97.8 mph on his fastball, ranking in the 94th percentile league-wide. However, his secondary pitches have been less effective this season.
By acquiring him, the Tigers take on the remainder of his $1.16 million salary.
