ST. LOUIS BLUES ROLL TO BIG WIN AS FAMILIAR FACE RETURNS TO THE BENCH

June 15, 2025 | Enterprise Center, St. Louis – By SportsBeat Newsroom

The energy inside Enterprise Center on Saturday night was electric, and not just because the St. Louis Blues delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche. Fans had even more reason to cheer as a beloved figure made his long-awaited return — former Blues captain David Backes rejoined the organization in a new role as assistant coach.

The Blues, riding a wave of momentum with playoff aspirations in sight, wasted no time asserting dominance. Brayden Schenn opened the scoring with a power-play goal midway through the first period, followed by a dazzling two-point night from rising star Jake Neighbours. But the biggest cheers came not during the on-ice action, but during the pregame ceremony when Backes was introduced to the crowd.

A Hero’s Return

Backes, who spent 10 seasons with the Blues from 2006 to 2016, including five as captain, was visibly emotional as he stepped onto the bench in his new role. The former Olympian and fan favorite last suited up for the Blues nearly a decade ago, but his connection to the city never waned.

“It just feels right,” Backes said postgame. “This building, these fans, this franchise — it’s home. And being back, helping develop these young men and contribute to something special again, it means the world.”

General Manager Doug Armstrong praised the decision to bring Backes on board, calling him a “natural leader” and “an embodiment of what Blues hockey is all about.”

On-Ice Domination

With their new assistant coach looking on, the Blues played one of their most complete games of the season. Jordan Binnington made 31 saves in net, while veterans Pavel Buchnevich and Justin Faulk added a goal apiece. The defense, organized and physical, stifled a dangerous Avalanche squad that came in riding a three-game win streak.

“The energy was different tonight,” said Blues head coach Drew Bannister. “The guys wanted to make a statement, and having David back — someone many of them grew up watching — it gave us a spark.”

A Turning Point?

The victory lifts the Blues to third in the Central Division, and with Backes now part of the coaching staff, many are wondering if this could mark the beginning of a late-season surge.

“There’s a different kind of belief in this room,” said alternate captain Colton Parayko. “David has a way of motivating without saying much. His presence speaks volumes.”

What’s Next

The Blues continue their homestand with a key matchup against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday. But win or lose, one thing is certain — with David Backes back behind the bench, the Blues have more than just experience; they have heart, legacy, and leadership.

And judging by the roar of the St. Louis faithful, this is only the beginning of something special.
