“St. Louis Blues Is Where I Belong” – Star Veteran David Backes Returns in New Front Office Role

June 14, 2025 – St. Louis, MO

In a heartfelt and symbolic move, the St. Louis Blues have welcomed back one of their most beloved players, David Backes, who is officially returning to the organization — this time, in a front office role.

The former team captain and fan favorite will serve as Special Advisor to Hockey Operations, marking a full-circle moment in a career defined by loyalty, leadership, and a deep connection to the city of St. Louis.

Backes, 41, made the announcement at a press conference inside Enterprise Center, standing proudly alongside Blues GM Doug Armstrong. “This is where I belong,” he said, his voice slightly cracking with emotion. “This franchise gave me my first shot, my first ‘C’, and some of the best years of my life. Now, I want to help shape its future.”

From the Ice to the Office: A Legacy Continued

Backes played ten seasons with the Blues after being drafted 62nd overall in 2003. Known for his physical play, emotional intensity, and locker-room leadership, he served as captain from 2011 to 2016 before finishing his career with stints in Boston and Anaheim.

He officially retired from the NHL in 2021, but never truly left the game. Since stepping away from the ice, Backes has stayed involved in youth hockey development and player advocacy. His return to the Blues marks his first formal role with an NHL organization since retiring.

“This isn’t just ceremonial,” said Armstrong. “David is going to have a voice in decisions, especially in player development and team culture. He knows what it means to wear the Bluenote.”

Blues Fans Celebrate the Homecoming

Across the city and on social media, fans erupted with excitement upon hearing the news. Many still consider Backes the heart and soul of the early 2010s Blues, remembered for his fierce rivalries, clutch goals, and deep commitment to the team.

“I couldn’t imagine a better person to help lead us into the next era,” said season-ticket holder Rachel Thomas. “David Backes always bled Blue.”

The Blues are currently in a period of transition, blending a young core with experienced veterans. Backes’ role will involve mentoring players, advising on personnel decisions, and helping foster a championship-caliber culture.

“I’m not here to relive the past,” Backes said. “I’m here to help build a future the fans can be proud of — one that wins and does it the right way.”

With Backes back in the fold, the Blues not only gain a respected voice in their front office but also rekindle a bond between team, city, and legend — proving once again that St. Louis is where he belongs.
