Brendan Donovan Provides Encouraging Update Following Injury Scare

June 11, 2025 — St. Louis Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan offered reassuring news following a concerning injury to his left foot during Tuesday night’s 10-9 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Although he exited in the eighth inning, Donovan later confirmed that the issue is not severe and should not sideline him for an extended period.

The 28-year-old was held out of Wednesday’s game as a precaution, with manager Oliver Marmol opting to give him rest. However, Donovan told reporters he does not expect to join teammate Jordan Walker on the injured list.

Now in his fourth season with the Cardinals, Donovan has been a key piece of the team’s infield and outfield rotation. His versatility—playing second base, shortstop, and left field—has made him an essential part of Marmol’s lineup. Losing him for a stretch would be a significant setback for a team still finding consistency.

According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, Donovan said the team’s training staff was thorough in their evaluation, and he emphasized that an IL stint is viewed as a “worst-case scenario.” The MRI results confirmed the injury wasn’t serious.

St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan (33) is congratulated by teammates after scoring against the Kansas City Royals during the third inning at Busch Stadium.

Despite the tight loss to Toronto, the Cardinals remain above .500 and sit in second place in the National League Central, trailing the division-leading Chicago Cubs by five games. Donovan’s steady presence has played a big role in keeping the club competitive.

As the Cardinals prepare for a pivotal series against the Milwaukee Brewers, Donovan may miss a few games, but there’s optimism he’ll return soon. While he might not be the team’s marquee star, his impact has been undeniable—and St. Louis will look to stay in the playoff race with or without him temporarily in the lineup.
