Former Cardinals Star Matt Carpenter Hints at Return to St. Louis: “This Is Home”
St. Louis, MO – June 9, 2025 — In a development that has Cardinals fans buzzing with nostalgia and excitement, former St. Louis fan favorite Matt Carpenter has publicly hinted at a potential return to the team where he made his name — and his legacy.
Now 39 and a free agent after brief stints with the Yankees and Padres, Carpenter told reporters during a charity event in Texas this weekend, “If the Cardinals called, I’d answer. That’s home. That’s family. I still feel like I’ve got something left in the tank — and there’s no other jersey I’d rather wear again.”
Carpenter, a three-time All-Star who spent 11 seasons with the Cardinals (2011–2021), became a clubhouse leader and fan favorite with his gritty play, clutch hitting, and signature hustle. His resurgence with the Yankees in 2022 proved he still had pop in his bat, even as a veteran.
Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak did not confirm any talks with Carpenter, but in response to the comments said, “Matt will always be part of the Cardinals family. We’re focused on our current roster, but we never close the door on conversations.”

Fans quickly took to social media calling for a reunion, especially with the team currently battling inconsistency in its veteran leadership and offensive production. Some even suggested a part-time player/coaching role for Carpenter, who has long been praised for his baseball IQ and mentoring of younger players.
Whether it’s a farewell tour or a true second chapter, the idea of Carpenter returning to Busch Stadium in red once more has Cardinal Nation dreaming — and waiting.
