When the Buffalo Bills picked Ed Oliver in the 2019 draft, many hoped he might be the next Aaron Donald. While both players share a similar build, that comparison was a stretch. Oliver hasn’t consistently lived up to that hype—particularly in defending the run.

During his first four seasons in Buffalo, Oliver had his ups and downs. Still, the front office showed faith, extending him with a four-year, $68 million contract before the 2023 season—a move that puzzled some fans. But Oliver quieted doubters with a breakout 2023 campaign, tallying career highs in tackles (51), sacks (9.5), and QB hits (16).

Unfortunately, that momentum didn’t carry into 2024. Oliver’s production slipped, and he missed games due to injury. The Bills’ run defense struggled, and Oliver’s limitations in that area became more apparent.

PFF’s Rankings Reflect the Need for Buffalo’s 2025 Defensive Strategy

The Bills prioritized rebuilding their defense this offseason. GM Brandon Beane aimed to relieve pressure on Josh Allen by crafting a more complete defense—and so far, it looks like he’s on the right track.

Pro Football Focus analyst Trevor Sikkema ranked the top 32 defensive tackles for 2025 and slotted Oliver at No. 19. Here’s Sikkema’s assessment:

AFC Divisional Playoffs: Baltimore Ravens v Buffalo Bills

“Oliver remained a strong pass rusher with a 78.6 PFF pass-rush grade in 2024, but again struggled in run defense (50.4) and tackling (31.4). It marked his second straight year with a career-high in pass rushing, but career-lows in stopping the run and wrapping up.”

There’s no doubt Oliver excels at pressuring quarterbacks—but his lack of impact against the run is a concern. The good news? Beane built a defensive front that complements Oliver’s strengths.

The Bills signed DT Larry Ogunjobi—an interior defender known for his run defense (though he may miss the season’s first six games due to a PED suspension). In the draft, Buffalo aggressively moved up twice to grab defensive tackles T.J. Sanders and Deone Walker. They also landed a potential gem in DE Landon Jackson, a dynamic edge rusher with bend and burst reminiscent of a younger Von Miller.

Buffalo needed to add physical, run-stopping talent up front. DaQuan Jones has held the line well, but age and contract status made depth a priority. Now, with an infusion of young talent, the Bills can develop a more complete front seven—allowing Oliver to thrive as a pass-rushing specialist.
