Aaron Nola’s Injury Setback Raises Concerns for Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola is experiencing a setback in his recovery from a sprained right ankle, raising concerns about his return. Nola reported soreness in the ankle and was unable to complete a scheduled bullpen session, according to ESPN.

Nola was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 16 due to the ankle issue, which he sustained during outfield agility drills in Tampa. The lingering pain has caused him to overcompensate physically, leading to additional discomfort.

“It’s frustrating,” Nola admitted. “I’ve pitched through minor issues before, and I thought this would be the same. But it hasn’t gone away like I expected.”

Before landing on the IL, Nola struggled on the mound. In a rough outing against the St. Louis Cardinals, he gave up 12 hits, nine runs, and three home runs — all career highs. He currently holds a 1-7 record with a 6.16 ERA over nine starts this season. Over his 11-year career with the Phillies, Nola has compiled a 105-86 record with a 3.78 ERA.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola (27) throws a pitch during the first inning against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park.

To help fill the gap, the Phillies have called up right-hander Daniel Robert from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Robert was recently acquired from the Texas Rangers in an April 30 trade.

Meanwhile, infielder Edmundo Sosa also missed the team’s May 24 game against the Athletics due to discomfort in his left wrist.

Despite Nola’s absence, the Phillies remain strong contenders in the NL East. If the veteran right-hander can return to form later in the season, he could still play a crucial role in their postseason ambitions.
