Judge Dismisses Lawsuit at Center of St. Louis Park Basketball Hoop Conflict
A legal battle between neighbors over a basketball hoop in St. Louis Park has come to an end after a Hennepin County judge threw out the case on Tuesday.
Judge Lois Conroy dismissed the lawsuit, though the reasoning behind her decision has not yet been made public.
The Moeding family, long-time residents of their St. Louis Park home for over a decade, had clashed with new neighbors who moved in about a year ago.
“Not long after they moved in, they asked us to take down our basketball hoop,” Lilly Moeding told WCCO last month. The family later discovered the hoop was six inches too close to the property line and moved it. Still, the relocation didn’t satisfy their neighbors.
“It’s directly outside my front door. I can’t step out without facing it. I park there, and basketballs are constantly flying toward me,” the neighbor said during a city council meeting in November.

In February, the neighbors filed a lawsuit against both the Moeding family and the City of St. Louis Park, arguing the hoop should be classified as a “sport court” under local ordinances. In late April, they also requested a court order to stop the family from using the hoop while the issue was under review.
“I feel like I have to tiptoe around on my own property,” Lilly Moeding said in an interview with WCCO.
Last week, the neighbors’ attorneys filed a statement saying they’ve endured “extreme harassment” since the Moedings went public, including receiving death threats.
