Here are three trade options the Phillies could explore to replace José Alvarado:
-
Devin Williams, New York Yankees
While not the most glamorous choice, Williams has been an incredibly effective reliever in recent years. Although his current season numbers are struggling (7.80 ERA in 15 innings), his strikeout rate is still strong, and he’s been solid in his most recent outings. Williams has a history of dominance with a 1.70 ERA and 68 saves from 2020-2024, and his underlying stats (3.17 FIP) suggest he could rebound. As a rental player in a down year, he would likely come at a reasonable price for the Phillies. -
Mason Miller, Oakland Athletics
Miller’s 4.50 ERA doesn’t reflect his true talent. With a 47% strikeout rate and a fastball that hits triple digits, he’s been one of the most dominant relievers this year. If you remove one poor outing, his ERA drops to 1.69, which would make him a potential All-Star. He’s not eligible for arbitration until next year, making him a more valuable long-term asset. However, acquiring him would come at a high cost, likely involving top prospects, and the A’s may not even be ready to sell by the trade deadline. -
Ryan Pressly, Chicago Cubs
Pressly is the most affordable option, with 116 career saves and experience closing for a contender. However, his performance this season has been below his previous standards, with a fastball velocity at a career-low 93.1 mph. Still, if you remove his disastrous outing in early May, his ERA is much more respectable (1.65). While Pressly could be a temporary fill-in for Alvarado, he may not be the ideal solution if the Phillies are looking to compete at a high level for the rest of the season.
