Braves Expected to Move On From All-Star Pitcher Following Recent Roster Decision
The Atlanta Braves have demoted pitcher Bryce Elder to Triple-A, a move that was fairly straightforward. At just 25, Elder hasn’t performed to expectations, posting a 4.50 ERA. With key arms like Spencer Strider nearing a return, Atlanta’s rotation has little room for underperformers.
Though Elder has struggled recently, he may still be too skilled for the minors—a notion supported by his past success.
Elder’s Promising Start With Atlanta
Elder impressed during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, earning a 3.17 ERA in 2022 and a 3.81 ERA in 2023. While last season’s numbers weren’t elite, they were enough to make him a reliable option every fifth game. His strong first half in 2023 earned him his first All-Star nod.
Though he’s hit a rough patch, Elder’s youth and experience with a top-tier team could attract trade interest. It’s unclear which team might make a move, but he has appeal as a former All-Star with postseason exposure.

Atlanta Could Deal Elder Before Deadline
As the Braves evaluate midseason trade possibilities, Elder appears to be on the outs. Reports suggest that with no clear role for him—either in the rotation or bullpen—now may be the right time to explore a deal.
Nick Halden of ATL All Day wrote, “Elder is the most likely candidate to be moved from the rotation. He doesn’t fit the bullpen mold, and his track record is inconsistent. This might be the peak value Atlanta can get from him right now.”
Given the emergence of other pitchers like AJ Smith-Shawver and the versatility of Grant Holmes, Elder’s spot is increasingly expendable with Strider’s return imminent.
Challenges in Finding a Trade Partner
However, moving Elder may not be simple. Even if the Braves remain healthy, they may still seek a more dependable arm for the stretch run. Elder could be packaged with another player in a trade for a stronger starter, but it’s unclear if that would yield much value.
The Braves have multiple needs and likely won’t get a star player in return for the former fifth-round pick. But with Elder out of the rotation and no obvious bullpen fit, both team and player may benefit from a fresh start elsewhere.
Whether a trade materializes will depend on what Atlanta can get back, but signs suggest Elder’s days with the Braves could be numbered.
