Former Cardinals Star Matt Carpenter Announces Retirement

Veteran infielder and three-time All-Star Matt Carpenter is officially retiring after 14 seasons in Major League Baseball.

Carpenter shared the news during an appearance on the Get in the Game podcast, hosted by his former teammate Scott Linebrink and presented by Sports Spectrum.

Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 13th round in 2009 out of TCU, Carpenter spent the bulk of his career—11 seasons—with the Cardinals from 2011 to 2021. He later had brief stints with the New York Yankees in 2022 and San Diego Padres in 2023 before returning to St. Louis for a final run, appearing in 59 games during the 2024 season.

Reflecting on his career, the 39-year-old said, “It was a thrill to wear the Cardinals uniform for so many years.”
